January Sermon Series

When parents decide to take a step of faith on behalf of their children, they covenant to raise their child in the local church so their child has as many potential moments as possible to make a commitment to Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Worship, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, church camp, and youth group are some of these "means of grace" where God's love is realized personally. Baptism is usually a "first step" of spiritual growth early in a child's life ... but certainly not the last. We're clear with parents that the sacrament of baptism means a commitment to the local church - nothing magical happens when water is applied to a child's head if the parents do not decide to prioritize their lives around the faith community. Offering baptism without this kind of commitment is clergy malpractice. As parents, making these kinds of promises of how we are going to order our family life allows us to impact our children as much as possible because "Blink" and it's over.

As many of our more mature adults already know, even when our children move into adulthood, we never stop being parents and often become grandparents, giving us the privilege to continue shaping, albeit in a different role, those who God has placed in our lives, and if we are not biological parents or grandparents, each of us has influence. Over the next three weeks, we will explore these roles in our sermon series, "Blink: Shaping Their Heart, Shaping Their Future, Shaping Their View." We're excited how God will speak to us as individuals and as a community as we approach this subject through scripture and humor!
